Regular price $7,500.00An exceptionally rare vintage, the 1974 18-year-old Macallan Sherry Wood Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky was bottled in 1994 without any added coloring or chill filtration. This 750ml retail bottling, at 43.0% vol., is now considered one of Macallan's particularly rare original releases from the early 1970s.
The 18-year-old Macallan, matured in Oloroso sherry oak, is part of the series that established Macallan's almost legendary reputation for its pure sherry cask bottlings. It was in the mid-1960s that Macallan shifted its focus to sherry cask-matured single malts, quickly gaining recognition among whisky enthusiasts worldwide due to its unique cask policy. During this time, they experimented with various sherry casks before opting for European Oloroso casks, which had previously been seasoned with the renowned Spanish liqueur wine. Despite challenges faced by sherry producers in the 1980s, the Speyside distillery managed to secure a supply of select sherry casks, allowing them to continue bottling their coveted sherry cask matured whiskies.
Today, the 18-year-old sherry-oak Macallan Single Malt stands as one of the most famous and sought-after whiskies globally, enjoying an almost legendary status due to its exceptional quality and the fact that it is bottled without coloring agents. It truly embodies the essence of Scotch whiskies. In 2004, with the vintage 1986 bottling, Macallan revamped the design and packaging of the 18 Years Sherry Oak, introducing modern bottles in a shiny-purple box. From 1992 onwards, these bottlings featured a security hologram on the capsule and a unique number alongside the existing bottle code to combat counterfeiting. In 2017, the bottles were updated to indicate the year of bottling/release on both the label and the packaging. Inspired by the Rare Cask series, Macallan further refined the bottle design in April 2018, incorporating a distinctive v-shaped indentation in the glass at the neck, along with enhanced refill and counterfeit protection, all presented in an elegantly embossed box.
Particularly, the special sherry wood bottlings from the 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s are now nearly impossible to find and command exorbitant prices at auctions such as Bonhams, Kruger, and Christies, with a growing trend. The sherry oak vintage bottlings from the late 1980s and 1990s have also become highly coveted, with individual vintages now regarded as true rarities!
