Distiller Of The Month: Herradura
About the distillery
The story begins in 1870 at Hacienda San José del Refugio in Amatitán, deep in the heart of Jalisco’s tequila country. Legend says founder Félix López found a gleaming horseshoe, a herradura, on the grounds and took it as a sign of good fortune. More than 150 years later, that horseshoe remains one of the most recognised marks in agave spirits.
Herradura has always done things its own way. Every bottle is 100% blue Weber agave, slow-cooked in traditional ovens and fermented with naturally occurring wild yeasts that have lived on the hacienda for generations.
hTe house is also a true innovator. Herradura is credited with creating the reposado category in 1974, and later pioneered extra añejo with Selección Suprema. Its reposado rests for a patient 11 months in American white oak,
