The Balvenie 14 Year Old Caribbean Cask takes the same Speyside foundation as the DoubleWood and pushes it somewhere warmer. After 14 years in American oak ex-bourbon casks, the whisky is finished in casks that have been seasoned with a hand-picked blend of Caribbean rum, selected by malt master David Stewart.

The rum influence is real but not heavy-handed. It adds a tropical sweetness and a rounded, dessert-like quality that sits alongside the Balvenie's signature honeyed malt rather than covering it up. A step up from the DoubleWood in both age and richness, and a natural next bottle for anyone who has already worked through that one.

Distillery Information

The Balvenie distillery in Speyside is one of the last in Scotland to still run its own malting floor, steeping, drying and kilning its own barley on site. Having pioneered cask finishing decades earlier with DoubleWood, malt master David Stewart took it further with Caribbean Cask, having new American oak casks seasoned with a hand-picked blend of West Indian rum before finishing the 14-year-old malt inside them. It is one of the more distinctive expressions in the Balvenie range.
