Michter's Distillery

Brand Snapshot

The Michter's story is one of America's oldest and greatest whiskey revivals. The brand traces its roots back to 1753, when Swiss Mennonite farmer John Shenk founded a distillery in Pennsylvania's Blue Mountain Valley. It later became known as Michter's, earning a reputation for producing some of the finest rye whiskey in early American history.

After a series of closures through the 20th century, the brand lay dormant until the early 1990s, when entrepreneurs Joseph J. Magliocco and Richard Newman revived Michter's with a single mission: to create the highest-quality American whiskey, no matter the cost.

Today, Michter's operates in Louisville, Kentucky, and has become one of the most respected and sought-after whiskey producers in the world, renowned for precision, rarity, and uncompromising craftsmanship.

About The Distiller

History

The Pennsylvania operation didn't survive Prohibition in great shape. It reopened after repeal, changed hands a few times, and the original site finally shut down for good in 1989. For a while, Michter's was just a name with no distillery behind it.

That changed in 1997, when Magliocco and business partner Dick Newman bought the trademark and brought in veteran distiller Willie Pratt to help rebuild the whiskey from scratch, starting with sourced barrels while they figured out the long game.

In 2014, Michter's opened its own distillery in the Shively area of Louisville, Kentucky. In 2019, they added a second site at Fort Nelson, a restored 1890s building on Louisville's Whiskey Row, plus a farm out in Springfield, Kentucky, for growing their own grain. What started as a name bought for a few hundred dollars is now one of the most decorated whiskey brands in the US.

What Makes Michter's Distillery Different

No Age Statement, on Purpose

Most of Michter's core range skips the age statement entirely. Instead of bottling on a schedule, Master Distiller Pamela Heilmann and Distillery Manager Andrea Wilson taste barrels together and pull them when they're actually ready, not just when a number on the label says so.

Heat-Cycled Warehouses

Michter's takes the extra, expensive step of heating its warehouses in winter to force more expansion and contraction cycles in the wood. More cycles means more contact between whiskey and barrel, which means more flavour. It just costs more to do.

Filled Lower, Aged Gentler

Barrels go in at 103 proof, lower than the industry standard of around 125. Lower entry proof means a gentler, slower pull of flavour from the wood over time.

Serious Barrel Standards

Michter's seasons and air-dries its own barrel wood for anywhere from 18 months to 5 years before it's even toasted and charred, with the toast and char profile decided for every individual batch.

A Name With Real History

Not many whiskey brands can trace a direct line back to 1753. Michter's leans into that heritage instead of just using it as a marketing line, with releases built specifically to honour the Shenk's and Bomberger's history behind the name.

How They Make It

The Grain

Michter's uses USDA No. 1 grade, non-GMO grain, some of it grown on their own farm in Springfield, Kentucky. Quality grain in, quality whiskey out.

Distillation

Everything runs through a 100% copper distillation system, which helps strip out unwanted compounds and keep the spirit clean before it ever sees a barrel.

The Barrels

Wood is air-dried for 18 months to 5 years, then toasted before it's charred. It's a slower, more deliberate process than most distilleries bother with. Barrels are filled at a lower 103 proof for gentler extraction.

Heat-Cycled Ageing

Barrels rest in Michter's Kentucky warehouses, where the buildings are heat-cycled through winter to push more maturation cycles into every barrel. Barrels are tracked and tasted throughout the process to see how each one is coming along.

No Fixed Timeline

Instead of bottling at a set age, barrels are pulled when they're ready, typically 5.5 to 7 years for the core range, and decades longer for the rare stuff.

Bottling

Once approved, the whiskey is filtered and bottled in Kentucky, with the Shively site handling production and the historic Fort Nelson building on Whiskey Row keeping the brand's story front and centre.

The Range

Michter's runs a wide lineup, from everyday sippers through to genuinely rare releases.

US*1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon

The flagship. No age statement — it's ready when it's ready, usually somewhere around 5.5 to 7 years. Smooth, easy-drinking, with caramel, vanilla, and oak you'd want from a straight bourbon.

US*1 Rye

Same approach, rye grain. A bit more spice and bite than the bourbon, still smoothed out by the same patient ageing process.

US*1 Sour Mash and American Whiskey

The Sour Mash leans into Michter's old-school roots with a distinct, well-rounded profile. The American Whiskey is the lighter, more approachable entry point into the range, a good one if you're just starting out.

US*1 Single Barrel and Barrel Strength

Single Barrel bottlings come from one cask at a time, so no two are exactly alike. Barrel Strength versions (bourbon, rye, and sour mash) skip the water down and are bottled straight from the barrel at full proof.

10, 20 and 25 Year

The aged end of the range. These sit in the barrel far longer than the core lineup and come with a real price tag to match. Built for someone who already knows their way around a bottle and wants something rare.

Celebration Sour Mash

A once-in-a-while release, blending a handful of exceptional barrels, some over 30 years old. About as top-shelf as American whiskey gets.

Legacy Series

Small releases like Bomberger's Declaration and Shenk's Homestead, made as a nod to where the Michter's name actually came from.
