Pinhook Bohemian Kentucky Straight Bohemian
In the heart of Louisville's Whiskey Row, Angel's Envy is a distillery that dared to challenge convention. Founded in 2010 by Lincoln Henderson, one of bourbon's most respected figures, it's not just another whiskey brand. It's a philosophy, a family legacy, and a statement of how far craftsmanship can evolve without losing its soul.
Lincoln, a member of the Bourbon Hall of Fame and the creative mind behind icons like Woodford Reserve, believed perfection was never static. His idea was simple but revolutionary: take exceptional Kentucky straight bourbon and finish it like fine wine, a practice common in Scotch but almost unheard of in bourbon at the time.
The bourbon is aged traditionally in new, charred American oak for four to six years, then it takes an extraordinary detour. The flagship bourbon spends several months in ruby Port wine casks, developing layers of red fruit, vanilla, and chocolate. The Angel's Envy Rye rests in Caribbean rum barrels for up to 18 months, yielding a rich, molasses-sweet spice.
How the name was derived: As whiskey ages, a small portion evaporates from the barrel. That's the angel's share. What's left behind, Lincoln claimed, must be the Angel's Envy. It's poetic, but it's also a statement of intent: every drop would be worthy of it.
In 2015, Bacardi Limited acquired Angel's Envy, providing global reach while preserving the family-led ethos. Today, under Master Distiller Owen Martin, the brand continues to evolve Lincoln's dream without compromising what made it stand out.
The idea started in 2006, when Wes Henderson convinced his father Lincoln to come out of retirement and chase a project Lincoln had wanted to try for years. By 2010, they released Angel's Envy Kentucky Straight Bourbon Finished in Port Wine Barrels, and it picked up acclaim fast.
That first bourbon was sourced whiskey, aged elsewhere and finished by the Hendersons. While the brand was gaining momentum, they broke ground in 2013 on their own distillery in downtown Louisville, right on Whiskey Row.
Lincoln passed away in September 2013, before the distillery was finished. Wes carried the project forward, and in 2016 Angel's Envy opened as the first full-production whiskey distillery on Whiskey Row since Prohibition. Bacardi acquired the brand in 2015, and Wes stayed on as Chief Innovation Officer until 2022, when Owen Martin stepped in as Master Distiller.
Angel's Envy wasn't the first to finish whiskey in a second barrel, but they're the ones who brought it into the mainstream for bourbon. Age it in new charred oak like normal, then move it into a wine or spirit barrel for extra time. That's the whole idea behind the brand.
Lincoln Henderson wasn't some new name chasing a trend. He'd already helped build some of the biggest bourbons on the market. Angel's Envy was him doing it his own way, on his own label, after decades in the industry.
In 2016, Angel's Envy opened the first full-production distillery on Louisville's Whiskey Row since Prohibition, putting bourbon production back in the historic district where it used to be, right in the middle of downtown.
The bourbon and rye started out sourced from established distillers, with Angel's Envy adding their own barrel-finishing touch. These days their own Louisville distillery is producing new-make too, so the brand is shifting from finisher to full producer without dropping what made it stand out in the first place.
The bourbon runs on a mash bill of 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley. The rye whiskey flips that around, running 95% rye and 5% malted barley for a spicier, more direct base.
Both go into new, charred American oak barrels first, the same as any straight bourbon or rye. The bourbon typically ages 4 to 6 years before it goes anywhere near a finishing barrel.
This is where Angel's Envy does its own thing. The bourbon moves into 60-gallon Ruby Port barrels, made from French oak and shipped in from Portugal, for several months. The rye goes into Caribbean rum casks for up to 18 months. Same idea either way: a second barrel, a second flavour layer, before it's ready to bottle.
Once the finishing barrel has done its job, the whiskey is blended, checked, and bottled in Louisville, not far from where Lincoln and Wes first got the idea off the ground.
Angel's Envy is built around finishing, so most of the range comes down to what barrel the whiskey spends its last few months in.
The flagship, and the one that started it all. Aged 4 to 6 years in new American oak, then finished for months in Ruby Port barrels shipped in from Portugal. Sits around 86.6 proof, with dried cherry, plum, and a bit of dark fruit sweetness on top of the usual oak and caramel.
A 95% rye mash bill finished for up to 18 months in Caribbean rum casks. Spicy rye base, softened out with tropical fruit, brown sugar, and vanilla. A good option if you want something with more kick than the bourbon.
An annual limited release, bottled at full proof straight from their best barrels. Bourbon one year, rye the next. Bigger, bolder, and built for someone who already knows the standard releases and wants more of everything.
The yearly deep-dive release, finished in less common barrels including Oloroso sherry, Cognac, Madeira, and tawny port. High proof, small batch, and usually gone fast. Worth grabbing if you spot one.
