Fortaleza Reposado is one of those bottles that gets brought up every time people talk about what tequila should taste like. Made the old way, with a tahona, brick ovens, and copper pot stills, then rested in used American oak for around 7 to 9 months.

The result is a reposado with real depth. The agave is front and centre, the oak adds vanilla and caramel without taking over, and the whole thing drinks like it came from somewhere with a lot of history behind it.

Because it did. This is the Sauza family distillery, one of the oldest in Tequila. And it still does things the hard way.

Fortaleza Reposado is produced using some of the most traditional methods still in use today.

Every step is the traditional way. Slower, harder, and worth it.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Cooked agave, vanilla, caramel, and light oak. A touch of citrus and baking spice underneath.

Palate: Rich and smooth. Cooked agave and vanilla up front, with butterscotch, dried fruit, and a gentle spice. The oak is present but doesn't dominate.

Finish: Long, warm, and satisfying. Agave and vanilla linger with a dry oak note at the end. One of the better finishes in the reposado category.

Distillery Information

Fortaleza is produced at Destileria La Fortaleza (NOM 1493) in the town of Tequila, Jalisco, by Guillermo Erickson Sauza, a descendant of one of Mexico's most storied tequila families. The distillery dates back generations and still operates using traditional methods that most producers abandoned decades ago.

Tahona-crushed, brick oven-cooked, copper pot distilled. Additive-free. A serious operation with serious credentials.

How to enjoy

Best enjoyed neat in a wide-bowled glass to fully appreciate its texture and complexity. A few drops of water can open additional savoury and citrus notes. Also exceptional as a contemplative sipping tequila.
