Corazón Anejo Tequila
Overview
Corazón Añejo is where the Highland agave really gets to show what it can do. Aged a minimum of one year in American oak, this is a richer, deeper tequila than the reposado, more caramel, more vanilla, a stronger oak backbone, but the sweet agave character that defines Corazón across the range doesn't disappear. It just settles in alongside everything else.
This is the bottle for slower evenings. It's worth sipping neat to actually taste what a year in barrel does to good-quality agave. Smooth, warming, and more complex than the price suggests.
The Distillery
Made at Destiladora San Nicolás (NOM 1479) in Atotonilco el Alto, Los Altos Highlands of Jalisco. Corazón is part of the Bacardi portfolio and is particularly well regarded for its Expresiones del Corazón range, an aged series rested in barrels from Buffalo Trace Distillery, including those previously used for Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, and Blanton's Single Barrel.
That American whiskey crossover is worth understanding: sourcing barrels from Buffalo Trace isn't a marketing exercise, it's a genuine commitment to the quality of the wood doing the aging work. The standard Añejo is built on the same philosophy, quality agave, quality oak, time to do it properly.
Why We Recommend It
At Bourbon Brothers, we recommend Corazón Añejo for customers who want:
- A rich, oak-forward tequila that still respects the agave underneath
- The natural sweetness of Highland agave paired with caramel and vanilla from a full year in barrel
- A serious sipping tequila without the serious price tag of some competitors
- A step up from reposado, more complexity, more depth, more to explore
If you're ready to move past reposado and want to understand what añejo is all about, Corazón is a well-priced, well-made place to find out.
Production & Craftsmanship
| Agave | 100% Blue Weber Agave |
| Region | Los Altos (Highlands), Jalisco, high-elevation agave with a naturally sweeter, fruitier profile |
| Cooking | Traditional brick ovens (hornos) |
| Extraction | Roller mill |
| Fermentation | Open stainless steel tanks |
| Distillation | Double distilled in copper pot stills |
| Additives | None declared |
| Aging | Minimum 12 months in American oak barrels |
A full year in oak is a meaningful commitment. At this price point, a lot of producers rush the process or lean on additives to fake the depth. Corazón earns it properly, the complexity here comes from time in barrel, not shortcuts.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Rich caramel, vanilla, toasted oak, and cooked agave. A touch of dried fruit and warm spice underneath. Noticeably richer than the reposado, this one takes a moment to open up.
Palate
Full and smooth. Caramel, vanilla, and oak spice up front, with the Highland agave sweetness holding its ground in the background. A hint of dark chocolate on the mid-palate. Good weight without being heavy.
Finish
Long and warm. Oak spice fades into vanilla and a gentle sweetness that lingers well after the sip. One of the cleaner, more satisfying finishes at this price range.
What Makes This Tequila Special
How to Enjoy
Best enjoyed neat or over a single large ice cube, this is one where you want to taste what's in the glass rather than mix it away. That said, it makes an exceptional Tequila Old Fashioned if you're after a cocktail, and it holds up well alongside a quality dark chocolate or a slow evening cigar. Give it a few minutes in the glass before the first sip. It opens up.
