Overview

Glenmorangie A Tale of Tokyo is the fourth release in the distillery's "A Tale of" series, and the first one to bring rare Japanese Mizunara oak into the mix. Dr Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie's Director of Whisky Creation, blended spirit part-aged in Mizunara with whisky matured in bourbon and sherry casks. Bottled at 46%, it's a smooth, citrus-driven dram with a bit of spice and incense running through it. The bottle itself is worth a look too, wrapped in artwork from Japanese artist Akira Yamaguchi mixing Tokyo landmarks with the Highland distillery.

Tasting Notes

Nose: sandalwood, incense, dried cherries, vanilla, star anise and Glenmorangie's signature tangy orange.

Palate: silky and citrusy, with marzipan, fennel, dried fruit, white pepper, toffee apple and a touch of cinnamon.

Finish: mandarin and toasted almonds.

What sets this bottle apart

The first in the "A Tale of" series to use Mizunara oak, one of the rarest and priciest woods in whisky making. Blending bourbon, sherry, and Mizunara casks gives it a layered flavour without losing that easy Glenmorangie drinkability. The packaging is a proper piece of art, designed by Akira Yamaguchi and packed with details from both Tokyo and the Highlands. A limited release, so it won't be around forever.

Glenmorangie Distillery sits up in Tain, in the Scottish Highlands, known for its unusually tall stills and a habit of pushing into unusual cask finishes. A Tale of Tokyo continues that streak, built around a trip Dr Bill Lumsden took to Japan and the idea of bringing Mizunara oak into a Highland single malt.
