Sagamore Small Batch is built around the Maryland rye style: historically sweeter and more approachable than Kentucky or Indiana rye, and nearly lost to history before distilleries like Sagamore started reviving it. The whiskey blends two straight rye mash bills: a high-rye (95% rye, 5% malted barley) that brings cinnamon and clove, and a lower-rye bill that contributes caramel, honey and citrus peel.

Aged 4 to 6 years in high-char American oak and proofed down with limestone-filtered water from the Sagamore Farm spring house, built in 1909. The result is a rye that's spiced but not sharp, with a polished, grain-forward character that sets it apart from most bottles on the shelf.

Distillery Information

Sagamore Spirit opened its distillery in 2017 on the banks of the Patapsco River in Baltimore, Maryland, with the specific goal of reviving the Maryland rye whiskey tradition. Maryland rye was a distinct American style in the 1800s, sweeter and softer than its Pennsylvania counterpart, that was nearly wiped out by Prohibition and the dominance of Kentucky bourbon in the 20th century.

The distillery is backed by Kevin Plank, founder of Under Armour, and sources limestone-filtered water from the 1909 spring house at Sagamore Farm in Glyndon, Maryland. All whiskey is distilled on site and proofed with that farm water before bottling.
