Lagavulin 16 is where most whisky drinkers start when they decide it's time to try Islay peat properly. It's matured for 16 years mainly in ex-bourbon American oak, with a portion of European oak sherry casks in the mix, and bottled at 43% ABV. Big peat smoke up front, but it's balanced out by a proper sweetness and a long, dry finish rather than smoke for smoke's sake.

It comes from Lagavulin Distillery on Islay, part of Diageo's Classic Malts range, and it's been picking up gold medals for decades. If you want to know what real Islay whisky tastes like, this is the benchmark.

Distillery Information

Lagavulin means "the mill in the hollow" in Gaelic. The distillery sits near Port Ellen on Islay, beside the ruins of Dunyvaig Castle, once home to the Lord of the Isles. It was the first distillery on the island to go legal, officially opening in 1816 after John Johnston, a member of a local clan of illegal distillers, decided to do things properly. The barley here gets smoked with peat longer than usual, which is where that big, distinctive character comes from.
