The use of virgin American oak is the differentiator here, uncommon in Scotch, it adds a pronounced vanilla and coconut sweetness that rounds out what could otherwise be a more austere spirit. Combined with the sherry butt richness and the baseline bourbon cask backbone, the Sixteen achieves a depth that most 16-year expressions at this price point don't.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Warm and inviting. Ripe orchard fruits — baked apple, pear, peach — with honey, vanilla pod, and a whisper of toasted coconut from the virgin oak. Soft floral notes in the background alongside a hint of almond and light dried fruit.

Palate: Rich and layered. Toffee apple and stewed pear up front, giving way to Oloroso sherry spice — cinnamon, nutmeg, dried apricot. The virgin oak brings vanilla cream and a subtle woody depth. Well-integrated and round, with no single element dominating.

Finish: Medium-long and warming. Lingering dried fruit, soft spice, and a fading vanilla sweetness. Clean, satisfying, and more complex than the ABV would suggest.

Distillery Information

BenRiach was founded in 1898 by John Duff on the outskirts of Longmorn in Speyside, just a stone's throw from the Longmorn Distillery. It operated briefly, then sat silent for most of the 20th century before being revived in 1965 by Seagram. For decades it served primarily as a source of malt for blends, quietly building its own character without much fanfare.

The modern chapter began in 2004 when the distillery was purchased by a small independent consortium led by Billy Walker, who transformed it into a respected single malt brand with a sprawling range of cask finishes and aged expressions. In 2016, Brown-Forman acquired BenRiach along with GlenDronach and Glenglassaugh, and Master Blender Rachel Barrie overhauled the core range, bringing a more focused, cohesive lineup anchored by the Original Ten, Twelve, Sixteen, and Twenty One.
