Sandy Hyslop selects malt and grain whiskies that have each matured for at least 21 years, then blends and marries them to create a whisky with exceptional complexity and balance. The combination of ex-bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks gives the blend its signature richness: dried fruit, dark chocolate, and a long, warming finish.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Elegant and layered. Dark dried fruits, raisin, prune, sultanas, alongside milk chocolate, orange peel, and a light floral note. Soft vanilla and toasted oak from the long bourbon cask ageing, with a background whisper of smoke that never asserts itself.

Palate: Silky and full. Dark chocolate, stewed plum, and Christmas spice lead, with honey and toffee filling in behind. The grain whisky adds a creamy smoothness that carries everything together. Hints of hazelnut and gentle oak spice keep it from being too soft.

Finish: Long and satisfying. Lingering dried fruit, cocoa, and a faint peaty smoke that builds slowly toward the end. Exceptionally clean for a blend of this richness.

Distillery Information

Ballantine's traces back to 1827, when George Ballantine opened a grocery and wine shop in Edinburgh and began blending whisky for his customers. The brand grew steadily through the 19th century and became one of Scotland's most exported whiskies, a position it still holds today. It passed through several hands before landing with Chivas Brothers, the Scotch whisky arm of Pernod Ricard, who produce and blend the range at their facilities in Dumbarton and Paisley.

The heart of Ballantine's 21 is Miltonduff, a Speyside malt that has been central to the blend for generations, supported by Glenburgie and a collection of grain whiskies that provide the backbone and carry the aged character through the blend. Master Blender Sandy Hyslop has overseen the expression for years with a clear brief: maintain the house style while letting the age do its work.

How to enjoy

Neat is the right call, no ice, a minute to breathe. At 40% it's already calibrated for drinking without dilution, and water isn't necessary. On the rocks works well for a longer evening pour; the chill slows it down without shutting down the fruit and chocolate character.
