Why is nosing important in whisky tasting?

About 80-90 percent of what we taste comes from our sense of smell, which makes it an essential part of enjoying whisky. 

Nosing, or the act of smelling the whiskey before tasting it, is crucial in fully experiencing the flavours and aromas of the spirit. The sense of smell plays a significant role in our perception of taste, and by nosing the whisky properly, you can enhance your tasting experience and pick up on subtle notes that you might otherwise miss.

How to nose:

1. Hold the glass by the base or stem to avoid warming the whiskey with your hands and interfering with the aromas.
2. Gently swirl the whiskey in the glass to release the aromas. This action helps to aerate the spirit and bring out its full range of scents.
3. Hold the glass slightly below your nose, allowing the aromas to rise and greet you
4. Bring the glass to your nose and take short, quick sniffs to avoid overwhelming your sense of smell. Try to identify different scents, such as fruity, floral, spicy, or woody notes.

Adding a small amount of water to your whisky can help to open up the flavors and aromas, making it easier to detect subtle nuances.
