Maker’s Mark is one of the most recognisable and beloved bourbons in the world — and for good reason. Produced in Loretto, Kentucky since 1953, it was one of the first premium bourbons to hit the market and remains a benchmark for wheated bourbon to this day. Bottled at 45% ABV (90 proof), Maker’s Mark is known for its soft, approachable flavour profile and signature red wax seal.
What sets Maker’s apart is its wheated mash bill — replacing the traditional rye with red winter wheat. This results in a smoother, sweeter bourbon with none of the sharp spice found in high-rye recipes. On the nose, you’ll get vanilla, caramel, and soft oak. The palate follows with rich butterscotch, gentle spice, and toasted nuts, finishing warm and mellow with a creamy mouthfeel.
The Distinctive Production Process
The hallmark of Maker's Mark 46 lies in its special finishing process. After the initial aging in charred American oak barrels, the bourbon is further aged with seared French oak staves inserted into the barrels.
