Don Julio 1942 Anejo Tequila
Overview
Don Julio 1942 is the bottle people reach for when the occasion calls for something special. Aged for a minimum of two and a half years in American white oak barrels — well beyond what most añejos ever see — it develops a richness and complexity that's genuinely hard to match at any price. Deep caramel, toasted vanilla, chocolate, and a long warm finish that earns every bit of its reputation.
Named in tribute to the year Don Julio González founded his distillery, 1942 is the expression that put ultra-premium tequila on the map for a lot of drinkers. It's recognisable, respected, and for good reason. The liquid backs up the name. If there's one bottle on your shelf that tells people you know your tequila, this is it.
The Distillery
Produced at Destilería La Primavera in Atotonilco el Alto, Jalisco Highlands (NOM 1449). Don Julio González started here in 1942 with the ambition of making tequila the way fine spirits should be made — with patience, quality agave, and proper process. 1942 is the expression that most directly honours that founding commitment.
The Highland location continues to provide the natural sweetness and fruit character that runs through the entire Don Julio range. After two and a half years in barrel, that agave foundation is still detectable underneath all the oak influence — which is the mark of a well-made aged tequila rather than one that just tastes like wood.
Why We Recommend It
At Tequila Brothers, we recommend Don Julio 1942 for customers who want:
- The best aged expression in the Don Julio range
- A minimum of 2.5 years in oak — serious aging by any standard
- A premium gift bottle that people will genuinely appreciate
- A benchmark ultra-premium tequila for special occasions or upgrading the shelf
It's also one of the most reliable crossover bottles for whisky and bourbon drinkers. The long barrel time and deep oak character sits in familiar territory for anyone used to aged brown spirits, while still being unmistakably tequila. One of those bottles you'll wish you grabbed two of.
Production & Craftsmanship
| Agave | 100% Blue Weber Agave |
| Cooking | Brick hornos (traditional ovens) |
| Extraction | Roller mill |
| Fermentation | Proprietary yeast in stainless steel tanks |
| Distillation | Double distilled |
| Still Type | Stainless steel pot stills |
| Additives | Produced to commercial standards |
| Aging | Minimum 2.5 years (30 months) in American white oak barrels |
Two and a half years in barrel pushes 1942 well past the 12-month añejo minimum and into territory most tequilas never reach. The extended contact with American white oak is what builds the deep vanilla, caramel, and chocolate character that defines this expression. It takes time to get there, and that time is reflected in what's in the glass.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Rich vanilla, dark caramel, toasted oak, roasted agave, and hints of chocolate and dried fruit. Inviting and complex without being overpowering.
Palate
Full-bodied and smooth. Deep caramel, vanilla, chocolate, warm cinnamon spice, and a soft oak backbone. The Highland agave sweetness holds through underneath all of it.
Finish
Long, warm, and exceptionally clean. Vanilla, spice, and a lingering sweetness that fades slowly. One of the best finishes in the premium tequila category.
What Makes This Tequila Special
How to Enjoy
Neat, always. Maybe over a single large ice cube if you want to open it up slightly. This is not a cocktail tequila — it's too good for that. Pour it, take your time with it, and let it do what two and a half years of careful aging was put in for. If you do want to mix it, a simple Tequila Old Fashioned is about as far as it needs to go.
