The Kentucky Owl Maighstir (pronounced May-stir) is a remarkable limited release  that occurs when two of the worlds best Whiskey Masters collaborate, John Rea (the man who created Four Roses) and Maureen Robinson (Johnny Walker and Diagio).

Crafted from a blend of 4, 5, 8, and 9-year-old Kentucky straight bourbons, this expression showcases multiple mash bills incorporating corn, wheat, rye, and malted barley. Bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV), it offers a perfect balance of richness and drinkability while reflecting the creative freedom that defines Kentucky Owl’s limited editions.

Since the arrival of John Rea, from Four Roses, Kentucky Owl have been leaders in the willingness to experiment with limited editions. They released the Takumi and the St. Patricks with leading Japanese and Irish Master blenders respectively.

Tasting Notes

Nose:
A sweet sense of small grains mainly the malted barley, with a hint of sweet caramel and vanilla. It gives the sensation and question; is this a great bourbon, or is this a great Scotch?

Palate:
Warm spicy sweetness from the rye that you might expect from a great bourbon, but the soft tones from the wheat and barley give a pleasant calming warmness to the tongue. As it melts the essence of citrus lingers.

Finish:
The soft caramel/vanilla reappears. it trails with a soft long finish.
