Añejo Tequila | La Cofradía
Overview
La Cofradía Torre de Picos Añejo is a 100% agave añejo aged 11 months in American oak barrels, five months longer than its Reposado sibling, and presented in the same striking unglazed ceramic bottle hand-painted by Mexican artisans and fired at 1260°C. That extra time in oak makes a noticeable difference: the profile deepens into richer caramel, baked agave, and vanilla territory, with a heavier body and a warmer, more considered finish.
The Distillery
Produced at La Cofradía (NOM 1137) in the Tequila Valley, a distillery with over 50 years of production history and a heritage that includes being the original production site for Clase Azul tequila before that brand moved to its own facility. That background puts NOM 1137 in a different conversation from most mid-range tequila producers, and the quality and consistency of the liquid across the Torre de Picos range reflects it.
The same 40-hour masonry oven cook and double distillation used across the La Cofradía range forms the foundation here. The añejo classification simply gives the distillate more time to develop in the barrel before bottling.
Why We Recommend It
At Bourbon Brothers, we recommend La Cofradía Torre de Picos Añejo for customers who want:
- A richer, more developed step up from the Torre de Picos Reposado
- Classic añejo character with deeper oak, caramel, and vanilla without excessive complexity
- A collectible ceramic bottle that works as a gift or a shelf piece
- Genuine 100% agave quality from a distillery with serious credentials
If you're working through the Torre de Picos range, this is the natural next pour. If you're new to it, it's a solid introduction to what añejo tequila can do.
Production & Craftsmanship
| Agave | 100% Blue Weber Agave |
| Cooking | 40 hours in traditional masonry ovens |
| Distillation | Double distilled |
| Aging | 11 months in American oak barrels |
| Additives | Not stated |
| Bottle | Unglazed hand-painted ceramic, fired at 1260°C by Mexican artisans |
Eleven months in American oak sits comfortably in añejo territory, well into the range where oak starts to genuinely shape and deepen the flavour profile. American oak at this duration contributes caramel, vanilla, and toffee without overwhelming the agave underneath.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Baked agave, caramel, vanilla, and toffee. Richer and warmer than the Reposado, with a deeper sweetness throughout.
Palate
Full-bodied and smooth. Cooked agave sugars, caramel, toffee, and soft vanilla oak. Good weight and roundness with no rough edges.
Finish
Medium to long, warm, and sweet. Lingering toffee and oak that fades cleanly. More presence than the Reposado without tipping into heaviness.
What Makes This Tequila Special
100% Blue Weber Agave
40-hour masonry oven cook
11 months American oak aging
Unglazed hand-painted ceramic bottle
Over 50 years production heritage
NOM 1137, birthplace of Clase Azul
How to Enjoy
Best neat or over a single large ice cube to let the caramel and vanilla notes open up. It also works well in an Añejo Margarita or Tequila Old Fashioned where the oak depth integrates naturally with the other ingredients. Like the Reposado, the ceramic bottle is worth keeping. The unglazed finish and geometric design make it a popular decanter or decorative piece once the tequila is gone.
