Patrón Añejo Tequila
Overview
Patrón Añejo is where the range really settles into something special. Aged for over 12 months in a combination of American, French, and Hungarian oak barrels, it develops a richness and depth that's hard to find at this price: deep vanilla, dried fruit, warm spice, and a smooth, long finish that earns its spot as a proper sipping tequila.
What keeps it grounded is the Highland agave at its core. Even after a year in wood, there's still a brightness underneath all that oak, a fruity, slightly floral note that reminds you this is tequila, not whisky. That balance is what makes Patrón Añejo stand out from the crowd.
The Distillery
Produced at Hacienda Patrón in Atotonilco el Alto in the Jalisco Highlands (NOM 1492), using the same small-batch process across the entire range. Brick hornos, tahona extraction, open wooden vats, small copper pot stills. The same care that goes into the Silver is what you're still getting here, just with significantly more time in barrel added on top.
Every bottle is hand-labelled and numbered. It's a level of attention that's genuinely unusual for a global brand at this volume, and it's a big reason why Patrón holds its reputation across the range.
Why We Recommend It
At Bourbon Brothers, we recommend Patrón Añejo for customers who want:
- A rich, smooth añejo that's built for sipping neat or over a single ice cube
- Proper depth and complexity from 12-plus months of oak aging
- The Patrón Highland character still shining through despite the long barrel time
- A premium bottle that works as a gift or as the headliner on your shelf
If you already know you like aged tequila and want a benchmark añejo from a label everyone respects, this is a solid pick. It's also a great introduction for whisky drinkers stepping across to tequila for the first time.
Production & Craftsmanship
| Agave | 100% Blue Weber Agave |
| Cooking | Traditional brick hornos (ovens), approximately 79 hours |
| Extraction | Combination of tahona (volcanic stone wheel) and roller mill |
| Fermentation | Open wooden fermentation vats with proprietary yeast |
| Distillation | Double distilled |
| Still Type | Small copper pot stills |
| Additives | Additive-free |
| Aging | Over 12 months in American, French, and Hungarian oak barrels |
The 12-month minimum in three different oak types gives the añejo its layered character. American oak leads with vanilla and caramel, French oak brings lighter spice and structure, and Hungarian oak adds depth. Blending barrels across all three types allows the master distiller to dial in a consistent, well-rounded profile batch after batch.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Rich vanilla, caramel, dried fruit, toasted oak, and a subtle floral lift from the Highland agave.
Palate
Deep vanilla, honey, dried fruit, cinnamon, and warm oak, smooth and full-bodied with a satisfying weight in the glass.
Finish
Long, warm, and rich, vanilla, spice, and a lingering sweetness that fades slowly and cleanly.
What Makes This Tequila Special
How to Enjoy
Patrón Añejo is made for sipping neat or over a single large ice cube. It's rich enough to stand on its own and doesn't need anything added to it. That said, it also shines in a Tequila Old Fashioned or Añejo Manhattan for those who like a longer drink with depth. One of those bottles you'll wish you grabbed two of.
