DeLeon Añejo is a different kind of añejo. It spends over a year resting in American oak, then finishes in ex-French Sauternes casks, the sweet dessert wine barrels DeLeon was the first tequila brand to use. That second cask brings a wine-like richness on top of the usual caramel and vanilla, so you get a tequila that tastes like it's had a bit of extra thought put into it.

Made from 100% Blue Weber agave grown in the Highlands of Jalisco, this is a sipping tequila through and through. Full-bodied, warm, and a good option if you want something a bit different from the usual añejo lineup.

The Sauternes finish is the standout here. DeLeon was the first tequila aged in Premier Cru Sauternes barrels, the same casks used for the famous French dessert wine. That extra time in a wine cask adds a layer of dried fruit and sweetness on top of the usual American oak vanilla and caramel, giving the anejo more complexity than most bottles at this level.

Distillery Information

DeLeon is produced at Destilería Morales (NOM 1519) in Arandas, in the Los Altos Highlands of Jalisco. The red clay soil and elevation out there push more sugar into the agave, which is part of why Highland tequilas tend to run sweeter and rounder than their Valley counterparts.

The agave used for DeLeon is harvested at 6 to 8 years old, roasted in traditional brick ovens, and double distilled in small batches. The distiller cuts the heads and tails and keeps only the corazón, the heart of the run, for a cleaner final spirit.
