Patrón is the brand that transformed the market for ultra-premium tequila. Founded in 1989 by Martin Crowley and John Paul DeJoria, the house was built on a single conviction: that tequila could command the same price and attention as the finest spirits in any other category. Produced at Hacienda Patron (NOM 1492) in the highlands of Atotonilco el Alto, Jalisco, Patron combines a rare dual-production method - running tahona stone and roller mill simultaneously and blending the results - with extended cooking times and small-batch fermentation in pine wood tanks. It is now the world's best-selling ultra-premium tequila and has been owned by Bacardi Limited since 2018, when Bacardi completed its $5.1 billion acquisition of the brand.

Hacienda Patron is located in Atotonilco el Alto, a municipality in the Los Altos de Jalisco highlands at an elevation that brings cooler temperatures, distinct red clay soils, and longer agave maturation cycles than the lowland valley region. The highland environment produces Blue Weber agave with higher sugar concentration and a characteristically fruit-forward, floral profile that differs markedly from lowland expressions. The hacienda was sited in Atotonilco el Alto specifically for its access to quality highland agave from surrounding farms and the deep wells that supply the mineral-balanced water used throughout production.

Patron sources 100% Blue Weber agave from the highland farms of Jalisco, harvested at approximately seven years of maturity by jimadors using traditional coa cutting tools. The agave is transported directly to the hacienda, where it undergoes a production process that separates Patron from virtually every other producer of its scale: running two distinct milling methods in parallel and blending the results into a single finished spirit.

The brand began with a bottle. In 1989, Martin Crowley was travelling in Mexico on business when he encountered a hand-blown glass bottle that struck him as exceptional. He brought it back to his partner, John Paul DeJoria - co-founder of the Paul Mitchell hair care brand - with the idea of filling it with the finest tequila they could produce. DeJoria agreed, and the two men went to work developing a premium product and a distinctive package to match. Their first 12,000 bottles sold at $37 each, an unusually high price for tequila at the time, establishing the positioning that has defined the brand ever since.

In the early years, production was contracted to established highland distilleries, including Siete Leguas and El Viejito, while Crowley and DeJoria built the infrastructure to support the brand's growth. Martin Crowley died in 2003, leaving DeJoria as the controlling partner. By that point, Patron had become one of the fastest-growing premium spirits brands in the United States, and plans were already underway for a dedicated production facility. Hacienda Patron was completed in 2002 and began exclusive production of all Patron expressions in 2006, bringing the full operation under one roof in the Jalisco highlands for the first time.

Bacardi Limited acquired a minority stake in Patron in 2008 and completed the purchase of DeJoria's 70% stake in January 2018, taking full control of the brand for a total consideration of $5.1 billion - one of the largest transactions in the history of the spirits industry.

The brand has received consistent recognition at international spirits competitions across its range, with the Silver, Reposado, and Gran Patron expressions earning medals at events including the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The brand's most enduring contribution to the denomination is commercial rather than technical: it established the proposition that tequila could be sold at luxury prices on the basis of quality and craftsmanship, and it proved that proposition at scale. The ultra-premium tequila segment that now includes dozens of producers exists in the form it does in large part because Patron demonstrated the market for it.

Style in the Glass

Patron's house style reflects the fruit-forward, floral character of highland agave combined with the textural complexity that comes from blending tahona and roller mill production. The Silver is sweet, clean, and approachable, with citrus and cooked agave at the centre and a smooth finish that made it the default ultra-premium tequila for a generation of drinkers. The Reposado adds warmth and spice without disrupting the fruit-forward base, and the Anejo deepens and darkens the profile while keeping the agave character present. The Gran Patron expressions take the same foundations and push them toward their extremes: Platinum toward purity and delicacy, Piedra toward depth and texture, Burdeos toward richness and complexity.

Production at Hacienda Patron begins with cooking the harvested agave hearts in traditional clay brick ovens. The pinas are steamed over 79 hours in alternating periods of steam and rest, a longer and more gradual cook than most large-scale producers employ, converting the agave's starches and inulin into fermentable sugars while developing the depth of cooked-agave character that runs through every expression in the range.

The defining feature of Patron's production is what happens next. Rather than selecting a single milling method, the distillery runs both the tahona and the roller mill simultaneously on separate batches of cooked agave. The tahona is a two-tonne volcanic stone wheel that slowly crushes the cooked pinas, keeping the agave juice and fibres together so that the liquid is gradually absorbed by the spent material before separation. The roller mill, by contrast, presses the agave mechanically through a series of rollers, cleanly separating the sweet mosto from the bagasse. The two methods produce juices with measurably different aromatic profiles: the tahona process is slower and generates more textural complexity and earthy agave character, while the roller mill produces a cleaner, brighter juice.

Each batch is fermented separately in small pine wood tanks, with the tahona juice and the roller mill juice undergoing their own independent fermentation over approximately three days. The fermented washes are then double distilled in copper pot stills before being blended back together at roughly equal proportions. The result is a spirit that carries the complexity of the tahona process alongside the precision of the roller mill - a combination deliberately engineered to produce a profile that neither method could achieve alone.
