ARDBEG DISTILLERY:
THE PEAT-POWERED LEGEND OF ISLAY
History
Founded in 1815 on the rugged southern coast of Islay, Ardbeg Distillery has become one of the world’s most iconic peat-driven single malt producers. Once nearly lost to closures in the 1980s and ’90s, Ardbeg was revived in 1997 and quickly rose to cult status. Today, it stands as a global whisky powerhouse — celebrated for its smoky intensity, maritime depth, and uncompromising craftsmanship.
Distilling Process
Ardbeg is defined by heavily peated malt, traditionally kilned using Islay peat that imparts deep smoke, brine, tar, citrus, and earthy complexity. Fermentations are long, distillations slow, and the tall stills create both weight and finesse. The whisky matures in a mix of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, resting in warehouses battered by Atlantic winds — the ultimate expression of Islay terroir.
What Makes Ardbeg Unique and Revered
Ardbeg is revered for delivering big flavour with surprising balance. Despite its massive peat levels (among the highest in Scotland), Ardbeg maintains remarkable sweetness, citrus brightness, and silky texture. Limited releases such as Ardbeg Corryvreckan, Uigeadail, and Ardbeg Day editions have created one of whisky’s most loyal followings, supported by the worldwide fan community known as the Ardbeg Committee.
Master Distiller & Team

Ardbeg’s whisky is overseen by Head of Distilling & Whisky Creation Dr. Bill Lumsden, one of the most awarded and innovative creators in Scotch. His expertise in flavour, cask experimentation, and precision blending ensures each Ardbeg release maintains the distillery’s legendary intensity and quality.
