Penelope X Series represents the brand’s boldest step into experimental bourbon making. Crafted in limited releases, each expression showcases innovative cask finishes and unique blending techniques that push beyond traditional bourbon boundaries. Where Penelope’s core range balances four-grain elegance, the X Series explores rich double-cask maturations, rare wine and fortified barrels, and nuanced wood profiles to create layered depth and complexity. 

 

Upon arriving in Kentucky, the opportunity to select a Penelope X Single Barrel was truly exciting, given how new the program is.  Presented with a diverse array of casks—finished in Oloroso Sherry, PX Sherry, Cognac, or double-finished in Cognac and Oloroso Sherry, we were immediately drawn to those that preserved the essence of exceptional Bourbon while adding nuanced layers from the finishing casks. This particular barrel exceeded expectations, delivering a remarkable palate, with a nose and finish that invite you to indulge repeatedly.

Tasting Notes

NOSE - Hints of dark berry sweetness with soft wood, whole almonds or walnuts, as well as some classic vanilla and spice

PALATE - An explosion of rich chocolate (fruit & nut), extremely balanced sherry notes (not too sweet, not too dry), with a backbone of oak

FINISH - Fine leather, dried fruits, and a subtle lingering tannin
