The Spot’s name was derived from the Mitchell’s practice of marking their maturing casks of whiskey with a mark or daub of coloured paint to determine the age potential of the whiskey. Blue Spot was a 7 year old whiskey, Green Spot (10 year old), Yellow Spot (12 Year Old), Red Spot (15 year old), the Gold Spot (13 years)… but the prince of their range.
Gold Spot 13 Year Old
A rather special limited release joins the Spot Irish whiskey collection from Mitchell & Son! Named The Generations Edition, this Gold Spot single pot still whiskey showcases the harmony of heritage and innovation, and champions wine cask maturation. This expression is a marriage of Gold Spot's established bourbon and sherry cask matured whiskey, matured for an additional 16 months in Recioto della Valpolicella Italian red wine casks. The result is a sumptuously smooth sipper, with layers of sweet, vinous red fruit, jammy berries, and rich oak.
Tasting Note by The Producer
Nose Red apples and dark fleshy fruits at first, accompanied by fragrant blossom notes with sweet and woody undertones. Spices of clove and light dustings of nutmeg along with subtle hints of almond slowly come to the fore, complementing the fruits.
Palate Luscious and sweet with generous servings of red berry compote, toffee apple and raisin. The wine seasoned casks and oak continue to impart delicate tannins, working in tandem with the pot still spices and fruits, while the sweetness adds further intricate flavours, balancing this wonderfully intriguing whiskey.
Finish Lingering finish which sees the oak slowly fading, allowing the sweet wine and pot still spices to have the last word.
