High West A Midwinter Nights Dram Straight Rye Whiskey (Act 11 Scene 11)
Last year was the 10th iteration of the High West A Midwinter Nights Dram (Act 10), and saw the extra release of a second bottle dubbed Encore, This year does not seem to have another Encore release. What we have instead in High West A Midwinter Nights Dram Act 11 is a classic expression made from a Rendezvous Rye blend of MGP rye (95% rye, 5% malted barley) and High West’s own distillate, which is 80% rye, 20% malted barley. As ever, these have been finished in ruby and tawny port barrels, where they pick up considerable auburn coloration.
Like the works of our favorite playwright, William Shakespeare, a glass of A Midwinter Night's Dram is made to be savoured, and over all too quickly. This limited-release whiskey is a sumptuous marriage of rye whiskeys finished in Port barrels. The rye forms a beautiful base of vanilla, caramel, and cinnamon while the port barrels provide notes of raison, fig, dried fruit, and spice. Like a proper holiday plum pudding, it's brimming with lovely mulling spices, dried fruits, and crème anglaise. Sip it slowly through the coldest night.
This highly sought-after limited release from High West, a Utah-based distiller, was sourced from MGP distillery in Indiana. In 2016, parent company Constellation Brands acquired a minority stake in the Bardstown Bourbon Company, a contract-distillery where future releases will likely be distilled.
